A Manicure, Self-Care, and Lesson on empathy
The other day, my daughter Muizza and I shared a beautiful moment—one of those simple experiences that leaves an imprint on your heart. We went to get her nails done, something she had been looking forward to. Little did I know, this outing would turn into a lesson in empathy and self-care for both of us.
Muizza’s nail technician had vitiligo, a skin condition that creates white patches across the skin and, in some cases, completely transforms pigmentation. As we arrived, Muizza noticed the intricate patterns on the woman’s hands but didn’t shy away or stare. Instead, she smiled and asked the woman about her designs, sparking a warm and open conversation.
The technician, who was incredibly kind and patient, explained her journey with vitiligo. She spoke about how she used to feel self-conscious but now embraces her unique appearance, inspired by models like Winnie Harlow, who have turned vitiligo into a symbol of beauty. She told Muizza that what makes you different is what makes you special.

Watching Muizza listen intently and admire the woman’s confidence filled me with pride. My daughter didn’t just see someone doing her nails; she saw a story, a human being with beauty and strength.
As we left, Muizza kept glancing at her freshly polished nails and talked about how gentle and kind the woman was. On the way home, she asked me questions about vitiligo and why some people look different. It led to a heartfelt conversation about how everyone has something unique that makes them beautiful, whether it’s visible or not.
This experience reminded me of the deeper purpose of homeschooling: teaching our children to value kindness, understanding, and empathy. It’s about more than academics; it’s about raising compassionate human beings who see the beauty in others and treat everyone with respect.
Muizza’s simple manicure became an opportunity to show her the importance of caring for herself and connecting with others. It reinforced the vital lesson that self-care isn’t selfish—it’s about honoring yourself so you can show up for the world with love and understanding.
That day, Muizza left the salon with beautiful nails, but she also left with a powerful example of courage and confidence. And I left with a full heart, reminded once again of the profound wisdom children bring into our lives when we slow down and allow them to experience the world.
